Successful people possess a belief system that empowers them to achieve their goals, regardless of their circumstances or situations. This doesn’t mean they don’t face failures and setbacks; rather, they refuse to let these obstacles prevent them from reaching their potential.
By most standards, I’ve had a highly successful career in real estate — as a Keller Williams Mega Agent, Broker-Owner, and bestselling author. For the past 14 years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching some of the nation’s top-producing real estate agents. What I can genuinely attest to is that “success leaves clues,” and the following seven mindset hacks are essential components of any successful agent’s belief system.
1. The journey to learn is shorter than a lifetime of regret
If you’re reading this post, you’re likely a person who values learning. While this mindset hack may seem basic, truly grasping its meaning requires a deeper exploration.
Many of my coaching clients are eager for knowledge but often seek it in areas of personal interest rather than in areas where they most need to learn and improve. This tendency leads us to read, listen, and absorb information that aligns with our current beliefs and understandings.
As adults, we may hesitate to invest time to learn new things that seem uninteresting, complicated or outside of our comfort zone. However, as you build and grow your real estate business, you will encounter challenges that demand fresh approaches.
Remember Einstein’s quote: “You cannot solve a problem with the same thinking that created it,” or Henry Ford’s adage, “Do what you have always done… and get what you have always gotten.”
“You cannot solve a problem with the same thinking that created it.”
—Albert Einstein
This mindset hack reminds us that despite the time and effort it takes to learn something new, complicated, or dull, it is far better than living with the regret of not reaching your full potential.
Let’s keep this in mind as you read the remaining hacks. 😉
If you focus on the fear of rejection, you will miss out on the opportunities that come with putting yourself out there. Greater inventory, builder incentives, and assumable mortgages are just a few examples of what you could be missing. Remember, “What you focus on expands” – your mindset plays a crucial role in your outcomes.
Similarly, prioritizing relationships, dignity, and peace of mind over a commission check is essential in the real estate industry. Doing the right thing, even when it’s not financially beneficial, can strengthen your bond with clients and lead to long-term success.
Taking personal responsibility for your circumstances is another crucial mindset hack. By asking yourself, “How am I creating this situation?” or “How am I allowing it to be like this?” you shift from victim to victor, empowering yourself to make positive changes.
Finally, don’t be afraid to “shine your light.” Fear of rejection can hold you back from reaching your full potential. By standing up for what you believe in and sharing your message authentically, you attract those who resonate with you and create meaningful connections. While I cannot dictate the actions of others, I have the power to “shine my light” so that my tribe can easily find me.
### 7. Embrace Growth for Opportunities
It is often claimed that everyone desires results but is unwilling to put in the necessary effort. This mindset hack encourages us to focus on the personal growth we experience while striving towards our objectives.
When coaching my clients to become better listing agents, it is vital for them to engage in more appointments with challenging sellers or compete against more seasoned agents. While they may receive feedback about their lack of experience, limited marketing plan, or pricing strategy, it is in these areas that their growth truly takes place.
We must welcome the experience and feedback, no matter how tough or negative, to refine and enhance ourselves. Rather than viewing this feedback as an insurmountable obstacle, this mindset hack reminds us that growth is an integral part of the journey. By embracing the feedback and experiences, we can gradually break down barriers until we reach the other side.
Focusing on our growth allows us to realize that achieving our goals is not just about trial and error but about becoming a better version of ourselves in the process.
### 8. Give Freely, Expect Nothing in Return
This mindset hack can be challenging for new agents transitioning from traditional 9-5 jobs. The concept of investing time and effort without immediate compensation may seem foreign to many.
The real estate industry rewards value, not just time or effort. While it is important to earn income and support oneself and family, success in real estate comes from the value one brings.
To achieve significant success and maximize earnings, one must be willing to offer knowledge, attention, and time without expecting immediate compensation. Whether working with first-time homebuyers or assisting sellers, giving freely without expecting immediate returns is crucial to building trust and credibility.
While it may feel like you are giving without receiving, trust that the goodwill you sow will eventually yield future clients, referrals, and the desired income.
### Your Turn
These mindset hacks have been instrumental in helping me navigate through challenging times. After facing adversity during the Great Recession, I learned valuable lessons in patience and self-reflection. These principles have guided me to become the coach and leader I am today, helping both myself and my clients achieve seemingly impossible goals.
