  • A quarter of mothers are looking forward to being pampered once their kids return to school
  • 1 in 10 fathers confessed to playing hide and seek without actually searching for their children during the school holidays
  • Aldi is giving 100 fortunate shoppers the opportunity to enjoy a day of luxurious pampering in exchange for a humorous school holiday story

Aldi has introduced the most budget-friendly spa day in the UK after a survey revealed that two-thirds of parents find the school holidays stressful and struggle to find time for themselves. The retailer’s latest Specialbuy can be obtained by simply sharing a tale from the school holidays.

Research involving over 1,000 parents discovered that half (49%) eagerly anticipate their children going back to school so they can have more relaxation time, with nearly a quarter (23%) counting down the days until the school gates reopen.

Parents have tried everything from hiding in the bathroom to putting their children to bed early in order to carve out some “me time” during the holidays. 10% of dads admitted to playing hide and seek without making an effort to locate their children, while a quarter of parents have turned household chores into games to keep their kids entertained.

One-fourth (24%) of mothers stated that their ideal way to spend the day their kids return to school is by indulging in pampering, although in reality, 50% will spend the day catching up on chores and tidying up the house after the holidays.

To celebrate ‘Parents Yay’ – the day when kids finally head back to school – Aldi is offering a Specialbuy Spa Day in exchange for a funny anecdote from the school holidays. Interested parents just need to email [email protected] with their story before midnight on September 6th, and 100 lucky individuals will receive a £75 Spa Day voucher.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, commented: “The back-to-school period is significant not only for the kids but also for parents. Our customers expressed a desire to be pampered, so what better way to spend ‘Parents Yay’ than at a spa day?”

Some of my fondest memories with my children are from the school holidays, so I am excited to hear about the adventures parents have had – and we will share some of the most amusing anecdotes on Aldi’s social media channels.”

The survey also revealed:

  • 39% of mothers believe the holidays are too long, whereas 19% of fathers think they are not long enough
  • Parents in the South East (47%) and South West (47%) are more likely to say the holidays are too long compared to those in the East Midlands (23%) and Scotland (21%), who are more likely to say the holidays are too short
  • Dads are more inclined to get creative in order to have some ‘me time’ during the holidays, including:

    • Hiding from their children (44%)
    • Pretending to be asleep (21%)
    • Sending children to bed before 6pm (17%)

  • The top five ways parents plan to spend ‘Parents Yay’ are:

    • Catching up on housework (45%)
    • Returning to work (43%)
    • Watching TV (25%)
    • Catching up with friends (18%)
    • Indulging in self-pampering (15%)
