The recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between HUD and DHS aims to strengthen collaboration by assigning a HUD representative to DHS’ Incident Command Center. This partnership will enhance data sharing and prevent taxpayer-funded housing programs from being used to support illegal immigrants.
During the announcement of the MOU in a video, Turner emphasized the importance of immigration enforcement in relation to housing affordability.
“Addressing the housing affordability crisis in our nation, we are committed to ensuring that American taxpayer dollars are directed towards assisting American citizens,” Turner stated.
Turner also highlighted that the MOU will utilize various resources, including technology and personnel, to prioritize American citizens in public housing. The collaboration with DHS will optimize resources to put American citizens first.
In the video, Noem expressed that the MOU signifies a partnership to ensure that housing programs benefit individuals who truly need assistance and seek a better life for their families.
Additionally, HUD’s Office of Public and Indian Housing (PIH) has directed Moving to Work (MTW) Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) to adhere to Section 214 of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1980. This section prohibits HUD-funded service providers from offering financial aid to illegal immigrants.
