Remembering Clark Halstead: A Visionary Leader in Real Estate

Clark Halstead, a two-time brokerage founder, passed away on Aug. 22 at the age of 83. He leaves behind a lasting legacy in the real estate industry.

In 1976, Halstead co-founded the Manhattan division of Sotheby’s International Realty with Edward Lee Cave. Eight years later, he went on to co-found Halstead Property with Diane Ramirez, who served as president, CEO, and chairman of the brokerage.

Chris Halstead, Clark’s nephew and executive sales director for Brown Harris Stevens Connecticut, described him as the “ultimate real estate professional” known for his knowledge and community-focused approach. Halstead created a business that was loved by its employees and left behind a wonderful legacy.

Halstead’s innovative spirit was evident in the way he sketched out the idea for Halstead Property on a napkin and successfully pitched it to an investment group over lunch, as shared by BHS controller Al Hughes in a blog post.

Throughout his career, Halstead was actively involved in the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) and played a key role in launching its residential division. Ramirez praised him as a “legend and trailblazer” who helped shape the industry with his sales and marketing expertise.

In addition to his business ventures, Halstead hosted a popular radio show and made television appearances, showcasing his passion for real estate and flair for marketing. One of his memorable marketing tactics was a fleet of branded London taxis equipped with luxurious amenities, which left a lasting impression on clients.

Halstead’s impact extended beyond his business ventures, as BHS CEO Bess Freedman highlighted his remarkable career marked by excellence, innovation, and genuine passion for real estate. His legacy continues to inspire those who had the privilege of working with him.

Despite facing personal losses, including the passing of his wife and long-time partner, Halstead is survived by his daughters, son-in-laws, and grandchildren. His contributions to the real estate industry and his commitment to community will be remembered fondly.
